How does solar panels reduce the carbon release in the air?

Many energy sources (coal, gas, etc.) generate their energy by chemical reactions which releases (among other things) carbon dioxide into the air.
A solar panel, on the other hand, absorbs energy directly from sunlight, so it doesn't actively release carbon into the air during its operation.
