This is a really good question. The full answer is really tricky (it took scientists a long time to figure it out!), here's a nice way to think about it.

Imagine heat as something you can store in an object, and move to other objects, and so on. Then, the basic rule is: Heat flows from hot stuff to cold stuff

This means that when you touch a hot thing to a cold thing, the hot thing moves some of its heat into the cold thing. This cools down the hot thing (it gave away some of its heat) and heats up the cold thing (it got some heat).

If two things are the same temperature, then heat doesn't have anywhere to flow.

So, if you have something hot in air, like a hot pot, the heat goes from the pot to the air, the table, to anything it touches. If you have something cold, like an ice cube, it takes heat from the air, the table, from anything it touches.

Does this help answer your question? And, keep asking questions!
