It's a combination of bacteria and flies and other icky things. You can actually do an experiment at home (outside), but be sure to ask your parents' permission! Take a piece of raw chicken or a piece of fruit or something, and leave it outside. Wait to see what happens! Hopefully an animal won't eat it. If you take a picture every day you can compare each day to each other.

I wouldn't eat or play with the rotting food, and it probably will smell bad, but it's a good way to see how dead things rot.
